Boiler and Machinery Insurance: Needed for More Than Just Heavy Machinery
Given the recent tornadoes in the western parts of Massachusetts, it is increasingly important for business owners to have Boilers and Machinery Insurance to protect their equipment in case of an emergency. Many people have the misconception that this policy will only suffice for large factories and manufacturing units, which is not the case! For the most part, small business owners don’t use heavy machines, but even the smallest of businesses use air conditioners, refrigerators, ovens, coffee machines etc. Malfunctions to these types of equipment could cause an explosion or fire, damage to your property and that of your neighboring businesses as well. The correct Boilers and Machinery Insurance policy can cover your business needs regardless of the size or type of equipment used.
Seeing that Massachusetts residents were not prepared for the tornado that hit, we at Smith Bros-McAndrews Insurance thought it would be beneficial to give you quick facts from FEMA to determine if a tornado is approaching and what to do in the case of a tornado.
Signs of a Tornado:
- A greenish or greenish black color to the sky.
- If there is a watch or warning posted, then the fall of hail should be considered as a real danger sign.
- Clouds moving by very fast, especially in a rotating pattern or converging toward one area of the sky.
- A sound a little like a waterfall or rushing air at first, but turning into a roar as it comes closer. The sound of a tornado has been likened to that of both railroad trains and jets.
- Debris dropping from the sky.
- An obvious "funnel-shaped" cloud that is rotating, or debris such as branches or leaves being pulled upwards.
Here are few tips for what to do during a tornado:
If you are in a structured building:
- Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level.
- If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls.
- Do not open windows.
If you are in a vehicle, trailer, or mobile home:
- Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or a storm shelter.
- Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes.
If you are outside with no shelter:
- Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of the potential for flooding.
- Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.
- Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas in a car or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter.
- Watch out for flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries.
It is important to be prepared for any type of disaster, not only tornadoes. Protect your business and all of your machinery by purchasing a Boilers and Machinery Insurance policy or reviewing your current policy to ensure coverage for all of your machine based items.
